The role of sponsor is to see that the confirmed person acts as a true witness to Christ and faithfully fulfills the obligations connected with this sacrament (Code of Canon Law 892). Church law specifies the following requirements for those to be Confirmation sponsors (Code of Canon Law 874):
– Must be at least 16 years of age
– Must be baptized
– Must have received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist in the Catholic Church
– May not be under canonical penalty
– May not be the father or mother of the child. A sponsor may be a your Baptismal godparent, grandparent, coach, family friend, aunt/uncle, older sibling, etc.
– Must be living a life in harmony with the Faith. This means:
– Attends Sunday Mass and Mass on Holy Days of Obligation
– Receives Holy Communion and Confession regularly
– Supports the mission of the Church
– Lives a life of virtue according to the moral teachings of the Church
– If married, must be married validly according to the laws of the Catholic Church
– If single, is living a chaste life (i.e. not cohabitating or simulating married life)
A completed Sponsor Eligibility & Saint Name Selection Form is due by December 6th, 2022.
